How to Calculate the IRCTC Booking Date for a Mid-Route Boarding Station

When you board an Indian Railways train at an intermediate (mid-route) station, your IRCTC booking opening date is determined by the date the train departs its originating station (Day 1), not your boarding date. If the train reaches your station on Day 2, general-quota booking opens 61 days before your boarding date (and 62 days prior for Day 3).

The Day-Offset Formula for Intermediate Boarding Stations

Long-distance Indian Railways trains frequently run across 2 or 3 calendar days. Every commercial stop on a train's timetable is assigned a running day number: Day 1, Day 2, or Day 3.

Step 1: Find your boarding station's running day (Day N) in the train route table. Step 2: Compute the day offset = (N − 1) days. Step 3: Subtract (N − 1) days from your boarding travel date to find the train's Origin Departure Date. Step 4: Subtract 60 days (for General ARP) or 1 day (for Tatkal) from that Origin Departure Date.

Real Example 1: Boarding 12952 Tejas Rajdhani at Kota (Day 1 vs Day 2)

Train 12952 departs New Delhi (NDLS) at 16:55 on Day 1 and reaches Kota Junction (KOTA) at 21:30 on Day 1 (offset = 0 days). However, it reaches Vadodara (BRC) at 03:42 on Day 2 and Surat (ST) at 05:18 on Day 2 (offset = 1 day). A passenger boarding at Vadodara or Surat on a Sunday must book on the same day as a passenger boarding at New Delhi on Saturday—meaning 61 days before Sunday at 08:00 AM IST.

Real Example 2: Boarding 12627 Karnataka Express on Day 2 or Day 3

Train 12627 departs KSR Bengaluru (SBC) at 19:20 on Day 1, reaches Solapur (SUR) and Bhusaval (BSL) on Day 2, and reaches Bhopal (BPL), Jhansi (VGLJ), Agra Cantt (AGC), and New Delhi (NDLS) on Day 3. If you board at Bhopal on Day 3 to travel to New Delhi, the train left Bengaluru 2 calendar days earlier—so your 60-day ARP window opens 62 days before your Bhopal boarding date at 08:00 AM IST.

How Rail.Yaar Automates Mid-Route Offset Calculations

Instead of manually looking up whether your halt falls before or after midnight, use the Rail.Yaar Booking Date Calculator: enter your 5-digit train number, click the radio button next to your exact boarding station in the route table, and pick your boarding date. The calculator automatically subtracts the station's (Day N − 1) offset before applying the 60-day ARP or 1-day Tatkal rule.

⚠️ Requires User Verification Before Publishing: Seasonal timetable revisions (such as the annual Indian Railways Trains at a Glance / Monsoon timetable for Konkan Railway) can shift a midnight-adjacent halt between 23:55 (Day 1) and 00:05 (Day 2). Always cross-check live station arrival/departure days on official NTES / IRCTC before booking.
