How the 60-Day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) Works on IRCTC

Under Indian Railways' 60-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) rule (effective November 1, 2024, replacing the earlier 120-day window), general-quota train ticket booking opens at 08:00 AM IST exactly 60 calendar days before the train's departure date from its originating station, excluding the date of journey at the origin.

How Indian Railways Counts the 60 Days (What Counts as Day 1?)

A common mistake passengers make is counting the journey date itself as one of the 60 days. Official Indian Railways reservation rules state that the 60-day Advance Reservation Period is calculated 'excluding the date of journey' from the train-originating station.

Formula: Booking Opening Date = Origin Departure Date minus 60 Calendar Days (opens at 08:00 AM IST). In this countdown, the day immediately before the train's origin departure is counted as Day 1 prior, and the 60th day prior is the date on which bookings open at 08:00 AM IST.

Worked Example with Real Train Data (12952 MMCT Tejas Rajdhani)

Suppose you want to travel on Train 12952 (New Delhi – Mumbai Central Tejas Rajdhani Express) departing New Delhi (NDLS, Day 1 Origin) on December 2, 2026 at 16:55. Excluding December 2, you count 60 calendar days backward: 1 day in December (Dec 1) + 30 days in November + 29 days in October (Oct 3 to Oct 31 inclusive = 29 days). Your general-quota booking opens on October 3, 2026 at 08:00 AM IST.

Why the Origin Station Departure Date Controls the Entire Train

For any single train run, IRCTC opens the reservation chart for all stations along the route simultaneously at 08:00 AM IST based on when the train leaves its very first station (Day 1).

If you board at anorigin station on Day 1 (such as NDLS on 12952 or MMCT on 12951), your boarding date equals the train's origin departure date. However, if you board at a station where the train arrives on Day 2 or Day 3 (for example, boarding 12627 Karnataka Express at Nagpur or New Delhi), booking opens 61 or 62 days before your boarding date.

Exemptions & Special Daytime Trains

While the 60-day ARP applies to almost all Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat services, Indian Railways maintains shorter advance reservation windows (such as 30 days or 15 days) for certain short-distance intercity/daytime trains and special services.

⚠️ Requires User Verification Before Publishing: Please verify the exact Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) Commercial Circular reference for the November 1, 2024 ARP revision (120 days -> 60 days) and confirm the current list of lower-ARP exempted daytime trains (such as Taj Express / Gomti Express) on indianrailways.gov.in.
