IRCTC PNR Status & Ticket Terminologies Explained
Every Indian Railways ticket displays shorthand codes for Booking Status, Current Status, Waitlist pools, Coach prefixes, Berth positions, and Quotas. Here is what each code means.
Booking Status vs. Current Status — What's the Difference?
Booking Status is the exact position or seat allotted at the moment your ticket was purchased. It never changes on your PNR record—even after your ticket gets confirmed. If your ticket was booked at General Waitlist #24, Booking Status stays GNWL/24 forever as a permanent audit trail.
Current Status shows your real-time queue position right now. As other passengers cancel tickets, your Current Status moves up (e.g., GNWL/24 → GNWL/8 → RAC/3 → CNF). Note: For waitlisted tickets that confirm, the exact Coach & Berth numbers (like B2 / 33 / LB) are often revealed only when the Final Reservation Chart is prepared (~4 hours before departure).
1. PNR & Waitlist Status Codes
Primary status abbreviations shown under Booking Status and Current Status.
Your seat/berth is 100% confirmed. If booked directly as CNF, coach & berth numbers are shown immediately. If upgraded from WL/RAC, coach & berth numbers appear after chart preparation.
You are guaranteed to board the train. Two RAC passengers share one Side Lower (SL) berth initially, and get upgraded to a full berth as last-minute cancellations or no-shows occur.
Issued to passengers boarding from the train's originating station (or nearby stations) and travelling close to the destination. Highest confirmation probability among all waitlists.
Issued for important intermediate junctions along the route. RLWL has a separate station-specific quota and only confirms when another passenger boarding from that same remote station cancels.
Shared across several smaller intermediate stations between origin and destination. Confirmation probability is lower than GNWL because the pooled seat quota is small.
Waitlist for tickets booked under the Tatkal scheme (formerly CKWL). TQWL goes directly to CNF without passing through RAC and has the lowest confirmation priority.
Allotted when tickets are booked from the originating station to smaller roadside stations along the route.
The maximum permissible waitlist cap for that class/quota has been exhausted. Even waitlisted tickets cannot be booked.
The passenger's ticket has been cancelled by the user or auto-cancelled by IRCTC after chart preparation because it remained on Waitlist.
Issued for children aged 5 to 11 years when the parent opts for half-fare without a separate berth.
2. Waitlist Confirmation Priority Order
When confirmed berths open up due to cancellations or extra coach attachment, Indian Railways confirms tickets in this order:
RAC passengers are always first in line to receive full confirmed berths before any waitlist pool.
Largest seat pool. Clears fastest during regular cancellations and chart preparation.
Depends on cancellations within the shared intermediate route segment.
Only clears when passengers holding confirmed seats from that specific remote junction cancel.
Does not get RAC; confirms only if confirmed Tatkal passengers cancel or unutilized quota is released.
3. Berth Position & Coach Prefix Codes
How to read your seat allotment string (for example: CNF / B2 / 33 / LB means Coach B2, Seat 33, Lower Berth).
4. IRCTC Reservation Quota Codes
Ticket quota codes shown next to your PNR booking details.
Standard 60-day ARP quota open to all passengers.
Last-minute booking opening 1 day before origin departure (10 AM AC / 11 AM Non-AC).
Dynamic surge-priced Tatkal quota where Waitlist tickets are not issued.
Reserved lower berths for men 60+, women 45+, and pregnant passengers.
Dedicated seats/berths reserved exclusively for female travellers.
Concessional berths earmarked for differently-abled passengers and their escort.
Reserved for Indian Armed Forces personnel travelling on warrant/duty.
Special quota available to foreign nationals and NRIs with valid passport.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between Booking Status and Current Status in PNR?
Booking Status is the initial waitlist or seat number allotted when your ticket was booked (e.g., GNWL/24) and never changes. Current Status reflects your real-time live queue position right now (e.g., RAC/4 or CNF/B2/33/LB).
Why does my Current Status say CNF without showing a Coach or Berth number?
When a waitlisted or RAC ticket gets confirmed prior to charting, IRCTC marks the Current Status as CNF immediately, while the specific Coach and Berth numbers (e.g., B2 / 33 / LB) are assigned when the reservation chart is prepared ~4 hours before departure.
Which waitlist confirms fastest: GNWL, PQWL, RLWL, or TQWL?
RAC passengers are upgraded first, followed by General Waiting List (GNWL), which has the largest seat pool and highest confirmation probability. PQWL and RLWL have smaller station quotas, while Tatkal Waitlist (TQWL) has the lowest priority.
