IRCTC Tatkal Booking Timings, Quotas & Rules (AC vs Non-AC)
IRCTC Tatkal ticket booking opens 1 calendar day before the train's departure date from its originating station (excluding the date of journey at the origin). Booking for AC classes (2A, 3A, 3E, CC, EC) opens at 10:00 AM IST, and booking for Non-AC classes (Sleeper SL, Second Sitting 2S) opens at 11:00 AM IST.
AC vs Non-AC Tatkal Opening Times on IRCTC
Indian Railways staggers Tatkal reservation openings by 1 hour to prevent server congestion across AC and Non-AC classes:
• 10:00 AM IST (AC Tatkal Window): AC 2-Tier (2A), AC 3-Tier (3A), AC 3-Tier Economy (3E), AC Chair Car (CC), and Executive Chair Car (EC). Note: First AC (1A) does not have a Tatkal quota under standard Indian Railways rules.
• 11:00 AM IST (Non-AC Tatkal Window): Sleeper Class (SL) and Second Sitting (2S).
How '1 Day Before Origin Departure' Works for Multi-Day Trains
Just like the 60-day ARP rule, the 1-day Tatkal advance period is anchored to the train's originating station (Day 1). If you board a train on Friday at its origin station (Day 1), Tatkal opens on Thursday at 10:00 AM / 11:00 AM IST. However, if you board at a station where the train arrives on Day 2 on Friday, the train originated on Thursday (Day 1), so your Tatkal booking opens on Wednesday (2 days before your Friday boarding date).
Tatkal vs Premium Tatkal (PT) & Cancellation Rules
Premium Tatkal (PT) opens at the same time as Tatkal (10:00 AM IST for AC, 11:00 AM IST for Non-AC) on selected trains, but uses dynamic surge pricing based on demand.
Under Indian Railways refund rules, confirmed Tatkal tickets carry zero refund upon passenger cancellation, except in cases of train cancellation by Railways, major delays, or route diversions.
